I am genuinely shocked to report that Stevenage Taxis (01438 357 111) are backing the driver who refused to carry my Guide Dog Chipp on the basis that I called him "a moron".
I absolutely did call him a moron - Stevenage Taxis insist three times - but actually it may have been many more times in point of fact.
On Monday night, I attempted to book a taxi through Stevenage Taxis on 01438 357 111 to take me with my guide dog to the vets in order to get my pet passport stamped for a trip to Paris. On arrival, the driver refused to take my guide dog - when I told him he is obliged to in law, he eventually capitulated partly so long as I put my guide dog in the boot of his car.... MORON.
I freely admit to having been very angry. At no point actually did I, would I swear at the MORON and neither is it suggested by the driver that I did.
I raised a formal complaint with Stevenage Borough Council who are investigating and I left a message for the manager TINA TURNBALL to return my call.
No call was returned, and so this morning (just a few moments ago in fact) I called them, mostly to say that I didn't blame them for their refusal because I'm sure they wouldn't support the driver.
The response from Turnball was "hmm ok". I said I thought that would be helpful, and I certainly hope you've had a chat with the driver". She sais "having listened to both accounts I'm backing the driver's actions" or words to that effect. She explained that she listened to my telephone call, and heard that I called the driver a moron on three occasions "which I think was very rude" she explained.
Here we go then Tina Turnball and Stevenage Taxis on 01438 357 111 - I definitely called the driver a moron on at least three occasions, and it may have been more times. I was being incredibly polite to him until he stated shouting and being aggressive in front of a witness.
The driver wanted to lock my guide dogin the boot - he wanted to not take him at first in fact and when they sent another car, he tried to demand money from me for the hair that was on the floor of his car for the brief minute I was in there.
He told me that guide dogs are dirty and the law would protect him.
In no way would I have associated this disgusting approach to Stevenage Taxis - but having spoken to their driver, they feel the fact that I called him a MORON negates his refusal and they're backing him all the way.
This is very unfortunate - needless to say after 12 years I shall never be using them again, and I will tell anyone who asks about my experience.
I am deeply hurt that Stevenage Taxis, and Tina Turnball in particular, after many years dealing with them would think it acceptable to firstly refuse my guide dog, and then to want to lock him in the boot.
What do you call someone who refuses a guide dog and wants to lock them in the boot then? Oh know, it's a moron isn't it?
